Qualified investments for RDSPs are generally the same as those for Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) and Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) and include cash, stocks, bonds, GICs, mutual funds and a variety of other investments. It is important to talk to your financial advisor to ensure that investments are appropriate for RDSPs. Where a non-qualified investment is acquired by an RDSP or where a qualified investment ceases to be qualified, a tax of 50% of the fair market value of the investment would be levied, and income earned on the investment would also be taxable.
