OTTAWA - Brenda Martin is finally a free woman.

Martin's lawyer says she was released on parole from a Kitchener women's prison Friday.

Guillermo Cruz Rico says Martin and longtime friend Debra Tieleman were en route to Trenton, Ont., to see Martin's mother. Martin, 51, had been held at the Grand Valley Institution for Women since she returned to Canada this month after spending more than two years in a Mexican prison.

A Mexican court found Martin guilty last month of involvement in a scam run by her ex-boss, former Edmontonian Alyn Waage.

She has always maintained her innocence.
